Chicago IL Collaborative Law Lawyer
Experienced Collaborative Law Attorney in Chicago, Illinois
When couples take a "scorched earth" approach to divorce, who really wins? Not the husband, not the wife — certainly not the children. The real winners in a divorce battle are the lawyers who present you with a large bill afterward.
At the Law Offices of Michael L. Shevick, we are not interested in being the beneficiary of a costly legal dispute at the expense of our clients' well-being. We want to help our clients reach common-sense solutions to the issues that must be resolved in their divorce. To that end, we encourage our clients to use the tools of divorce mediation, negotiation and collaborative law.
If you are considering divorce, learn more about how collaborative law can help you arrive at practical, workable agreements for property division, support and child custody.

A Collaborative Approach to Divorce
After 20 years of representing clients in Illinois family court, Mr. Shevick wanted to provide his clients with a more positive approach to reaching divorce agreements. He studied with and became a fellow of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois.
The collaborative law process is different from other methods of dispute resolution in divorce. Each party is represented by an attorney who is specially trained in the collaborative divorce process. Both lawyers sign an agreement not to bring the matter to court. If the collaborative approach does not "work" — if it does not result in a divorce agreement that can be taken before a family court judge — these attorneys will be excused from the case. This creates a financial incentive for the attorneys to work diligently toward a resolution.
